Aw yeah! Chicken and waffles at brown sugar kitchen. Will review properly on yelp, but these were dang good, if a bit pricey. I'm still drooling over the crunchy goodness of the waffles and the steaming hot juiciness of the chicken (i added a bit of salt and hot sauce, but it was still good). Oh, and thx to miz cat for the tip!Labels: chicken and waffles, foodie, moblog

mayo chicken variation
ok, this is becoming my favorite grilling thing: marinate the chicken for as long as you can stand it (this was two days in a kinda-kalbi marinade that i've been using on everything), then grill it, and when JUST about done, a thin coat of mayo/wasabi with furakake on top.
last night's version included kimchee stuffed under the skin (sy bought some only-ok kimchee, and i have to use it up!). the salmon also came out tasty. but no photos of those versions (one with kimchee, one without).Labels: foodie

dreaming of lunch...
mebbe there's hope in my cheap-eats bereft work hood. will report when can.
...
update 12/3/07:
thanks to a cancelled lunch meeting, we got to go check out the roach coach of our dreams! food was cheap, plentiful enough (free egg rolls were a nice touch) and ok. not stupendous. but ok. definitely a nice change from our standard fare around here, but not for the picky folks out there, ok?
extra random slightly dorky bit, turns out that the owner (per website: Julia Yoon, BBQ Princess of Yoon, from the Province of Yummii) went to high school not far from where i went. small world. but not really. we are still in california, eh?Labels: bay area, foodie

first kedai kopi there were tons of these -- every block, sometimes more than one or two on a block. this one is near ky's place, and we sleepily walked here after arriving that day...

kedai kopi our first kedai kopi meal -- and this is for only two of us...and i think we got the non-muslim special -- tons of pork and alcohol in the dishes.

kopi susu i think kopi o meant black coffee, and susu meant with milk (usu condensed, so it was nice and sweet). tarik meant it was poured back and forth making it frothy. and similar variations existed with tea. however i had it, it was good and strong.

veggie food! yep, this is all veggie. and it tasted great. there were a number of veggie places in melaka (malacca?) and every time we passed one, the resident veggie folks would jump up and down and do a veggie dance...

postcard - chinese food stalls in KL i think i was starting to get a little sick, or at least run-down, so we sat in a little bar across the way (with a very sweet and friendly bartender) and ate chips, drank beer (me) and tea (sy), and wrote postcards. it was a very nice air-conditioned break from wandering KL...

food is where the heart is
this year's off to a grand start -- we got to see ky and nars get wed (i'll have fotos up soon). (photos up on flickr -- lemme know, and i'll add you so you can see more than just the food shots!). it was -- appropriately enough -- filled with gorgeously meaningful tradition, celebration, and (of course) good food and even better people. our main complaint was that it was much much too short (so much food uneaten! waters left unswum! places unvisited!). but in the end, we ate all we could, met some fun, kind and good people. and got to see bits of the malaysian and thai clans from which ky and nars have sprung.
truly, i'm happy to be home again, with my sweet pup wiggling her way into my heart (and under the covers) and with amenities/luxuries i took for granted (clean rain, toilets that flush every time, hot water readily available at every faucet!). but in the end, travelling expands my sense of home as i make connections with folks and find that bond that links us all together (what, you like food too?!). and it opens my eyes to all that i do have, and all that i take for granted everyday...Labels: foodie, malaysia
