mayday

more photos from the march. (unforch, you'll have to sign in to see these...)

saw v for vendetta at the fabulous parkway, and tho the movie was only ok, it started me thinking about fear and all that it keeps me from.
[interesting but unrelated side note: the wikipedia lists this parkway -- a gay mecca in my backyard???]
then the protest -- and i have to admit, it's been ages since i've been to a protest. or not ages, but i've been a bit jaded of late. and sure, there's plenty of debate around this and every other issue that's out there. but there was something about being in the streets, surrounded by people -- families, students, working slobs like myself -- and just feeling all that good fired up positive energy that was, well, good.

and it's made me think more about how fear dictates so many of our my choices. how fear not only immobilizes, but also how fear creates anxiety and this culture of crisis and survival.

one of the soundbites i got outta the movie was about losing fear to be truly free. and i was listening to mlk jr on the way into work today (funny how all these things just fall into place sometimes) and he was speaking about finding his way through fear and finding his strength (tho his was of a more religious sorta thing). the other soundbite i got out of the movie was the value of ideas and how there are things more important than life. and when you have that, no one can take anything away from you.

but the best message in the movie (for me, at any rate) was valerie's letters -- as the power of art (and specifically writing) to sustain the spirit in the face of oppression.
