airline food
love the accidental lighting -- seems staged... and surprise! it's jook. yay for no egg brekkie! (nothing against eggs, but they do seem to be extra pukey when flying...)

first kedai kopi
there were tons of these -- every block, sometimes more than one or two on a block. this one is near ky's place, and we sleepily walked here after arriving that day...

our first kedai kopi meal -- and this is for only two of us...and i think we got the non-muslim special -- tons of pork and alcohol in the dishes.

kopi susu
i think kopi o meant black coffee, and susu meant with milk (usu condensed, so it was nice and sweet). tarik meant it was poured back and forth making it frothy. and similar variations existed with tea. however i had it, it was good and strong.

melaka
this was the touristy bit of our trip. we spent a couple days tooling around and enjoying the sites in melaka. the girls spent a fair amount of time wandering and looking at stuff, but i was happy as a clam to sit and draw for hours...

pottery studio
this studio was tucked away behind their shop. i wish for a studio like this... the couple seemed to be both making the pottery, and they had a kid running back and forth from the temple across the way. (there was some kid activity going on there, with food.)

i sat and drew this view for an hour or so. the local folks were quite funny and curious. the tourists were oddly all european men in short-shorts.

view of mosque
his is the view from our lovely room where we stayed in melaka (mahtoka hotel, i think). it's all on reclaimed land, but i tried not to worry about it. unforch the water wasn't really clean enough to swim in, but it made for nice views...

veggie food!
yep, this is all veggie. and it tasted great. there were a number of veggie places in melaka (malacca?) and every time we passed one, the resident veggie folks would jump up and down and do a veggie dance...

tree monkey
the helpful bee museum guy explained to me that there are tree monkeys and trash monkeys. these evidently come to these trees for the leaves that are rich in flavinoids. i have no idea what that means. but guess it's a good thing.

trash monkey - at the bee museum
the helpful bee museum guy made me eat some of the wax around one of the bee containers (chewy, not much flavor, but evidently rich in flavinoids?). and then he explained that these were trash monkeys, and you could see them all over. i missed the shot of them having sex. oh well, serves me right.

melaka zoo - flying foxes!
they were so amazing and cool despite being in a zoo. i was thrilled to get to see them...and one peed for us! (just as we were wondering how they did it -- they hang on by their "hands" and just let 'er rip! -- i was too excited to catch the moment...)

postcard - chinese food stalls in KL
i think i was starting to get a little sick, or at least run-down, so we sat in a little bar across the way (with a very sweet and friendly bartender) and ate chips, drank beer (me) and tea (sy), and wrote postcards. it was a very nice air-conditioned break from wandering KL...

naples yellow
let me tell you a story about naples yellow.

at some point, i thought very little of naples yellow. and to be fair, tending to purchase pigments on the cheap, i doubt that the pigment i've got is the real deal. but in any case, the naples yellow i've been using seemed to get swallowed up by any color i mix with it. it took a painting class that forced me to mix all the colors i own together (in a big grid) for me to learn the power of naples yellow.

and now, i'm finding that any pigment that i scorn (and trust me, on my budget, there's lotsa flimsy colors in my palette), are the ones that stun me when i mix them with other scorned colors.

take prussian blue, for example.
(ahem. as an aside, free the color! don't link to the hateful band by the same name. link to the color! up with the color in google! dismiss hate to lower page rankings on google! push it to page 3 and beyond! ok, i'll link to different articles now, i promise...)
but yes, prussian blue was the least favorite of all the blues in my palette. unlike naples yellow it aroused my ire for exactly the opposite reason, but with the end same effect. pb overpowers most of the other colors in my palette. and where ny is opaque (irritating at times), pb is translucent/transparent (also irritating at times). and mixing it with reds, depending on the red, would result in greenish brownish purples that only further irritated me.

now, and especially when mixing pb with ny, i find that these colors are simply sublime. i can't imagine shadows without pb, and i've found that white is often much too garish next to ny. it's gotten to the point where i'll start painting (ok, rarely, but it happens) with an idea in mind, but then --WHAM!-- suddenly, it's all about the colors. how they mix, how they don't mix, how they feel.

and in case you missed the links above, lookit -- pb's good for treating internal contamination with radiation and for data storage! just goes to show what i know...

(did you really just read all that...?)
