linkworthy news
bits of stuff that grabbed my attention...plenty going on to post about, but haven't had time. will do shortly.
- Design That Solves Problems for the World's Poor: a short, interesting and inspiring article in the nyt about design that matters. so now the question is, how do i make myself a designer for the 90% of the world's population that matter (instead of creating more crap)...?
- The idjoit who travelled internationally despite having a multiresistant form of TB. According to the nyt's article: "The man, whose name has not been disclosed, has said he was advised not to travel, but not specifically forbidden." And yet, the guy knew enough to avoid the US no-fly list by making "his way to Prague and flew from there to Montreal. ...He drove from there into this country until persuaded to go to a hospital in New York City." Whadda selfish git. Even if he didn't care about the passengers stuck on his flight, you'd've thought he'd worry about his bride to be. Not a very auspicious start to their wedded life together. But there's naught so queer as folk, eh?
- And finally, in the kooky korean-americans in the news series, have you heard about Azia Kim, an 18-year-old Korean American Stanford imposter? Personally, it does sound a little too kooky to be true, but whether it's an elaborate hoax, or a very clever ruse, I like it! And I'm with miz j, what kinda name is Azia anyway?

Byron Halsey: DNA in Murders Frees Inmate After 19 Years
this in from cwee...
if you needed it, yet another reason to question the legitimacy of the death penalty.
Byron Halsey was freed yesterday after serving time (for two decades!) for a crime he didn't commit.
[since the nyt link is archived now, here's one from the Innocence Project website: After 19 Years in Prison for One of the Most Heinous Crimes in NJ History, Byron Halsey Is Proven Innocent through DNA.]Labels: death penalty, heartbreak, justice, struggle

puppy monster
here she is. the latest disruptive force in my life...kooky coookie kuky. or as i like to call her, THAT puppy.
best part is, Kehoe and Puppymonster (Kucky, kooky, cooky, cookie, kuky...) managed to kinda sorta work out things on their own. We've been all cautious and careful and studied about it. Managing them separately indoors, keeping toys and food separate, separate spaces, indoor hanging out on leash and strictly supervised (basically, watching tv, and each person snuggling one pup). yeeagh! lotsa work, and waaaay more walkies, as she's not totally housetrained, so we're being very strict about her access to the apartment.
but yesterday, they took it into their own hands (paws?)... we left them at home (apart, but Cookie was uncrated in a small area), ran errands (including a lovely paddle that was just like last week's run, but with more wind and current). and lo and behold, came home and were greeted by *two* wiggly dogs (and kehoe was happily brandishing a toy!). Other than pee (on the cement floor--yay!) and a little bit of shredded trash in the bathroom (again, yay--not a book! not anything else in our non-puppy-proofed apt!) it was all ok! Since then, kehoe's been strict (cornering kookykookycookie in her area, till cookie finally just went to bed in her crate), so it's not yet easy, but with kehoe being the reactive dog that she can be...yay!Labels: dogdogdog, dogs

nice 'n easy sunday oc-1 run
more fun with google maps.
nice oc-1 run on sunday with alan--chrissy field to fishing pier to marina rocks, back to short pier then home. (1-1/2 to 2 hours). gorgeous sunny quiet day, slight headwind going down. some chop on the ama side had me concentrating, and working on getting loose and comfy in the water. fast paddle back, some chop, but not much headwind. gorgeous and finally loose and happy.
